The Royal Albert Hall was built to act as London’s village hall – a venue for all sorts of performances and events. There’s no other venue in Britain like it, and its circular auditorium has the most amazing atmosphere when full of spectators. The annual BBC Promenade concerts of classical music takes place here.
I used to work for a while at the Albert Hall and had to deal with frantic late-comers like those you can see just arriving in the linocut.
I was very fortunate in being able to see some wonderful performers, including the Bolshoi Ballet, from both the best seats and from the gallery at the top. There is no venue like it, and the atmosphere when it is full of people is tremendous. I once looked in on the auditorium when it was empty and pitch black, and you could sense the spirit of all those audiences over the years in that immense space.
A card is also available of my linocut of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre.
