This is a lovely old theatre, designed by the famous and prolific Victorian theatre architect Frank Matcham. It was originally a music hall. Hackney Empire fell on hard times in the 1980s, but was rescued and restored, and is now a much-loved local venue – particularly famed for supporting black performers and writers, and for its annual pantomime.
