Mendips Raceway, large colour linocut of stock car racing scene in Somerset hills, roughly A3

The Mendips Raceway colour linocut is a relief print inspired by the stock car racing track in the Mendip hills in Somerset. A great afternoon out for families. I remember going as a child, and it has not changed a bit.

This stock car racing circuit opened in 1969. It has a lovely away-from-it-all feeling, as it is tucked away in a hidden fold of the Mendip hills high above the village of Cheddar, and is reached via several lonely narrow roads on the plateau. It’s close to an area mined by the Romans.

The track is small and the races pretty short. The fun of the thing is watching the cars bash into each other. Within minutes the majority of the competitors have had to abandon their cars on the track or in the centre island – though it is surprising how many cars continue with various bits hanging off.

I call it stock car racing, but there are several categories of racing car, including the fantastic old bangers – astonishingly beaten up old vehicles having their last moment of glory before the scrapyard – dented and painted – with big bold numbers and the driver’s name or nickname. In one race, the engine just fell straight out onto the track. The car still managed a few more laps …

Sometimes old caravans, farm vehicles, or vans compete. And round the back, you can see the racing teams tinkering with their vehicles, trying to get one last race out of a faithful but decrepit old banger. There is very much the atmosphere of passionate hobbyists – probably for several generations.

Mendips Raceway colour linocut is a hand-pulled relief print in oil-based inks in a small edition of 50. The image size is just under A3 size (roughly 39cm by 29cm). It is printed on acid-free paper and signed by me, and sent with a backing board and pale mount so that it can easily be framed in a standard A2 size frame.

Each print in the edition is inked up and pressed individually, resulting in some slight differences between each print – making each one a unique work of art.

I send smaller prints wrapped in cellophane in a reinforced envelope or parcel. Larger prints or international deliveries may be sent rolled in a tube with protective tissue.
